I want to connect an external speaker to my ICOM 718. I purchased a 1/8"=
(3.5mm) Mono Male to stripped end cable. the cable does not go all the w=
ay into the jack? The manual says this is the jack to purchase: externa=
l speaker connector 2-conductor 3.5 (d) mm (1=E2=81=848=CA=BA) /8=CE=A9. A=
m I doing something very basically wrong?
Well, I was about to tell you how to solder a cable into a 3.5 mm mono plug,
but (a) looks like you have solved your own problem and (b) looks like what
you bought was a bit of speaker wire already terminated at one end with a
mono plug.
So I am left to surmise that either (a) somehow the male connector did not
mate with the opening into which you were attempting to insert it or (b)
you were imagining something completely different such as inserting the
unterminated end into the jack, thinking the idea was to connect to a
speaker that happened to also have a 3.5 mm jack. The first I won't
address because if it's not an obvious error you might have to send the
thing back. The second I won't address because it's easy to eventually
realize that you'll want to use the unterminated end to attach to the
speaker, something that might involve soldering, or perhaps just attaching
the bare ends to screws or to some form of quick disconnect hardware at
the speaker case.
Either way it should eventually be obvious how it all works, although to
someone with little electronics experience, soldering, or even stripping
wire to match the termination being used, might at first appear to be
a daunting problem.
